“Environmental Monitoring using Stomata as Indicator of Air Pollution in Naga City” 2007

Abstract:

The “Environmental Monitoring using Stomata as Indicator of Air Pollution in Naga City” aims to monitor the level of pollution in Naga City through the use of stomatal opening of fringed spider flower (Cleome Rutidosperma), which is a dicot plant found in most tropical countries. Through its epidermal imprints, the researchers have determined the present air quality condition of the specified sites.

The researchers did a pre-laboratory experiment to identify and choose the possible indicator species, and use the best species as indicator to monitor the level of air pollution in Naga City. Out of eight species that the researcher gathered from one pre-laboratory experiment, only two species showed visible of stomata and reacted to the stain; the Dwarf Santan (Ixora coccinea) and the fringed spider flower (Cleome Rutidosperma), but the former species despite its stomata’s good size and visibility, does not clearly shows the details of its epidermal imprint. The researchers decided tp use the latter species, Cleome rutidosperma, as the indicator species.

Diversion Road showed 61.91%, exhibiting a significant level of air pollution with regards to the percentage of closed stomata during the weekday and only a difference of 2% in the weekend, in comparison with Barangay Bagumbayan with 51.71% closure during weekday, 41.58% in the weekend, and Pacol with only 0.15% weekday and weekend, respectively. The result of Chi-square test shows that there is a significant difference with regards to the level of air pollution respectively.

The study concludes that Baranfay Triangulo (Diversion Road) display a higher level of air pollution as compared to Barangay Bagumbayan and Barangay Pacol which also slightly polluted and no significant level of air pollution, respectively.

The researchers recommend a further study with larger scope and time of study. In addition, the researchers recommends the implementation of a proposed management scheme in the Barangay or City Level. And a creation of a written Memorandum of Agreement should be made between the LTO the LGU together with the CENRO-DENR of the City of Naga. Regular implementation of Air Quality Monitoring in the City of Naga should also be done.

Effectiveness of the Barangay Micro Enterprises Act in assisting micro entrepreneurs of Naga City

Impact of People Participation in the Legislative Culture of the City Government of Naga

Description:

The system of partnership between the City Government and the people of Naga was formalized in 1996 with the passage of the Empowerment Ordinance. The ordinance provided space where the citizens, represented by sectoral leaders and representatives, participated in various fora of governance --- policy-making, progject implementation, among others.

More a decade after, there is a need to revisit the impact of the partnership under the Empowerment Ordinance through one of its major landmark provision: peoples' participation in local legislation.

In particular, the proposed study will look into the impact of the presence of sectoral leaders in the legislative culture of the City's local sanggunian.

Expected Output:

1. Analysis of the impact of the Empowerment Ordinance in the legislative culture in the city, looking at both perception among actors as well as the change in the legislative processes or actual ordinances and resolutions passed before and after the passage of EO

Inventory of Social Needs of Members of the Urban Poor Sector in Naga City

The study is intended to identify and rank the expressed unmet basic needs of the members of the Urban Sector who belong to organizations under the Naga City Urban Poor Federation.

In 1989, the NCUPF was organization and to date has a membership of x no of Urban Poor organizations with an average of x members, spread across the 24 barangays of the city.

Expected Outputs:

1. Interview of x number of Urban Poor members in x barangays;
2. Inventory of needs and ranked according to priority and disaggregated by age and gender

Other Information:

This research subject is covered under CRI Fund which provides for a grant of not more than Five Thousand Pesos (Php5,000.00) to cover various research expenses. Interested students are asked to submit submit an application letter and research proposal, a copy of which is available at your Student Government's Office or at your Dean's Office.
